10. Cozy Up! Dressing for Cold Weather Camping

Episode Summary:
This week we’re talk’n all about what to wear when cold weather camping from wool vs. cotton to layering and staying safe. While most people understand the concept of layering, it’s certainly nothing to overlook for cold weather camping. Having the right types of fabrics and layers is key to staying warm and dry. Moisture can come from more than just the outdoors with snow and rain. If you end up sweating inside your layers without wearing the right type of fabric, this can actually prevent you from staying warm.

Underlayers: go for lighter fabrics to stay close to your skin under bulkier clothes. This layer helps wick away sweat and keep you dry. Avoid fabrics that retain moisture such as cotton. Wool, polyester, and polypropylene are acceptable fabrics. Activewear clothing is also a great options as many times it’s designed to dry sweat quickly. Merino wool is also a great option in particular for it’s thinner and softer than regular wool and dries particularly quickly. Plus, wool is naturally antibacterial to help with odor!

Mid-layers: This layer helps insulate and trap your body heat. You still want this layer to be pretty thin to fit under your top layers. Fleece or down feather jackets or vests are a great option.

Top Layers: Helps keep out moisture from snow and rain as well as blocking wind chill. Go for a fabric that’s waterproof and wind resistant. Adding additional down feather stuffing for jackets on this layer will be great for retaining body heat.

  • Fill Power: gear rating for down feather jackets, blankets, and sleeping bags. Typically ranges from 300 - 900. The higher the rating, the colder the temperature it’s designed for.
